The issues of research initiatives should be chosen such to achieve an international impact of german water research as large as possible.

2. Networking of research institutions

The scientific competences and resources of german universities and applied research institutions should be optimally used.

3. Support of young academics at the development of multi-disciplinary method skills

The method skills should be enhanced by means of different mechanisms such as project-imbedded programmes or temporary employment abroad.

4. Integration of economic sciences and social sciences

An expedient cooperation with economic and social sciences as equal partners should be brought forward at an appropriate point to support the achievement of the research goal.

5. Link between fundamental reserach and application-oriented research

Especially in water research the link between fundamental reserach and application-oriented research is regarded as promising and should be kept with respect to the societal relevance of the issues.
