Senate Commission on Water Research of the German Research Foundation expired after more than 60 years

After more than 60 years, the last mandate of the senate commission on water research (KoWa) of the German Research Foundation (DFG) finished on June 30, 2017. The main tasks of the KoWa were in general the communication between the disciplines of water research and related disciplines, as well as in the last both mandate periods especially the development of the self-organisation of interdisciplinary water research.

The objective also given by the DFG of the last mandate period was the transparent and sustainable transfer of the content-based approach and the content-related approach of the KoWa into the structures of the Water Science Alliance e.V. (WSAeV) by creating a platform for interdisciplinary water research based on the principles of the DFG. With the foundation of the WSAeV and the establishment of the Water Research Perspectives Commission (WRPC) the main objective of the mandate period was achieved.

The WRPC should continue specifically the scientific and content-related tasks of the KoWa as a commission within the WSAeV. It consists four board members of the WSAeV, seven elected members and three guests (e.g. DFG, BMBF, BMUB) (see figure). For the seven freely eligible members, six categories - (1) hydrogeology, (2) hydrology, (3) limnology, (4) urban water management, (5) water chemistry, (6) integrated water resources management - and (7) thematically unbound or neighbouring category (socio-economics, governance, etc.) are defined.

Struktur der Water Research Perspectives Commission (WRPC)
